Barefoot Day makes its print on shoppers

A barefoot day held by a North East store to highlight the charitable initiative behind one of its shoe brands has been deemed a great success.
Yarm-based retailer Socialstore.com held the event in-store on Saturday to promote one-for-one shoe company TOMS which, for each pair of shoes it sells, gives a pair to somebody in a poorer country who is going without.
In addition to working barefoot on a busy Saturday, staff also helped customers to imagine what it's like to live without shoes by displaying sand, soil and rocks and inviting people to walk barefoot across it. They also provided free TOMS goodies as souvenirs of the event.
Socialstore.com manager and buyer Benn Geldart said, "As we are so inspired by the TOMS movement, we jumped at the chance to help spread the message and promote the company by holding this barefoot day.
"It was an absolute success. We had an excellent turnout at the store, and our customers were really enthusiastic about going barefoot and learning why the TOMS movement is so important.
"We hope that we have now encouraged people to consider buying from TOMS in the future. It is so easy for all of us to slip on a pair of shoes each morning without giving it a second thought, but the truth is many people suffer from injuries and illnesses as a result of not having shoes to wear, and we hope that we have brought this issue home to our customers."
The TOMS one-for-one movement was set up in 2006, when American traveller Blake Mycoskie befriended Argentinean children and found they had no shoes to protect their feet. With a desire to help them, he created TOMS and returned to Argentina later that year with a group of friends and 10,000 pairs of shoes which were made possible by TOMS customers.
As well as Argentina, TOMS also donates shoes to other poor countries, and it needs people to be aware of this movement so that they might purchase TOMS shoes and allow others to benefit from it.
It's safe to say that Socialstore.com staff have significantly helped to raise this awareness by holding their fun and informative barefoot day.
The clothing store also recently announced Middlesbrough model Josh Crow, 19, as the Face of Socialstore.com 2011. Winner Josh said: "I'm absolutely thrilled to have won this competition. As I am passionate about modelling, I feel honoured that I get to represent a local quality clothing store in this way." For more information on the store, please visit www.socialstore.com.
