History of Church Hymns

When you attend churches, funerals and weddings, you often hear songs which are known as church hymns. There are a lot of hymns which have been created over the years, but there are only a handful of these which are beloved. Those church hymns which have been cherished have brought comfort to millions of people worldwide and has also inspired worship. Although, we love to hear these hymns being sung on special occasions, there is something about these hymns that very few people know. It is the origin or the history of these hymns. There are tragic and painful stories behind some of the wonderful hymns that we hear today.
There were circumstances which inspired people to write their feelings in words. People from those olden days never intended their creations to be published. For example, the famous lyrics "It Is Well With My Soul" was created by Horatio Spafford after four of his daughters died. He created these lyrics when he was travelling by the place where his daughters had drowned.
The hymn "Pray Without Ceasing" was written by Joseph Scriven to encourage his mother to overcome the sad phase in her phase. This lyrics became every popular after that and has even been published as one of the most famous church hymns of all times. It can be coincidence that some of the most loved church hymns were created as a result of the writer going through woeful dilemmas.
A lot of people today are ignorant about the history of church hymns, but there are certain hymns which when remembered with their origin makes them even more beautiful to hear. "Amazing Grace" This hymn was created by John Newton. When he was young, he was morally corrupt and slow in his religious conversion. His mother died after suffering from tuberculosis when John was only six years old. It took him a long time to devote his life to God. When he was 18, he became the midshipman of the HMS Harwich. He could not tolerate the conditions on board and he deserted the service. Later on, he was captured, flogged with lashes, placed in irons and underwent other harsh punishments. A time had come when he considered suicide.
He endured terrible abuse and also had a near death experience. It was then he decided to follow god. While returning home in a terrible storm, his crewman were swept aboard and this was the time he prayed to the lord for the first time. When he returned home, he started worshipping Christ and in the year 1772, he wrote his famous lyrics "Amazing Grace". This hymn was based on how he was alone, still alive by God's grace and forgiven. Many other church hymns have been created in a similar manner. Exploring their origin surely makes them sound more beautiful.
